UPCOMING EVENTS!

Mark your calendars now:  Mother's Day, May 11th is also Pentecost Sunday.  We will have one worship service that morning at 10:00 A.M.  The Men's Club is throwing a Mother's Day Beakfast at 8:30 A.M. for Moms and their kids.  The Sunday School will be participating in worship and the theme will be "The Fruits of the Spirit".  Bring Mom.  Wear red for Pentecost and bring a piece of fruit for the Communion Table.
Sunday, May 25th, Vernon High School's Choral Group "Close Harmony" will be joining us for both our 8:30 and 11:00 A.M. services.
Our worship that morning will focus on the liturgical arts, and they will sing several gospel songs.  Holly Drew will also participate in both services, offering us a liturgical dance with a musical accompaniment based on the "Footprints in the Sand" poem.  Hope you can join us!
*Please plan to join us for an old-time summer favorite "ICE CREAM SOCIAL" on Saturday, June 29th at 7:00 P.M.  Music will be provided by the group "Revival".
CASA Volunteers - The Court Appointed Advocates (CASA) programs are recruiting volunteers to serve as advocates for the abused/neglected children.  Such volunteers help facilitate placement of children into a premanenet home and represent the child's best interest in family court.  CASA volunteers must be 21 years of age or older and have a sincere desire to help abused/neglected children.  To become a CASA volunteer, call (973) 579-0723.
PUT IT ON THE BLOCK!  The Session will be sponsoring an auction during 2008 to raise money for the general fund.  It has been about 10 years since the church held a real auction, and it was a very successful venture at that time, raising over $6,000.
This event will be different from our Silent Auctions in a number of ways.  First of all, it won't be silent!  We will be looking for an auctioneer, so if you are aware of anyone that we can contact, please pass along the information.  Second, we will be looking for items that are brand new, one of a kind or collectible items such as a handmade quilt or Longaberger basker, or items that will generate some interest, such as home furnishings or services.  If the event is to be successful then the items put on the block will have to be ones that will bring people in from outside the congregation.  Our intent is to raise additional funds to help us meet the 2008 budget, not to ask the congregation to dig even deeper than it already has.

In true Presbyterian fashion, the first step in this fundraiser is to -- wait for it -- form a committee!  Volunteers are needed now for the planning stages.  More will be needed as time goes on to procure items for the auction, pick up items if necessary, and for set up and clean up after the event.  It must be a church-wide effort.  If we all work together our budget woes can be going-going-gone!  Please contact Lynn Hayn if you are willing to be a part of the Auction Planning Committee.
The Community Choral Society will hold its Spring Concert on Sunday, June 1st at 3 P.M.  Rehearsals for the concert are held each Tuesday from 7:45 - 9:15 P.M. at St. Thomas Episcopal Church on Rt. 94, Vernon, N.J.  Singers in all sections are invited to sit in and see if they'd like to join.  Any questions, call Janet Morrison at (973) 209-7978.
The Membership Committee is in the process of updating its records on each member.  We are asking that each member complete a Membership Information Form and return it to the church by April 30th.  Forms are located in back of the sanctuary and in the West Chancel.  Thank you for your help.

All information for the next edition of the CHIMER should be left in the Church Office or contact Barbara Collver.  No handwritten material please! Thank you!
DEACON'S FOOD PANTRY MISSION:  The shelves are bare and food is greatly needed!
Items to be brought in for May/June:
  • Puddings, Snacks, Cake Mixes, Macaroni & Cheese, Shampoo, Soap, Toothpaste, Cereal, Pop Tarts, Oatmeal.
Things to collect all year:
  • Super market bags (brown & plastic).

Also for Samaritan Inn:  They will be collecting small appliances (coffeepots, toaster ovens, alarm clocks, etc.) and linens (towels, sheets, pillowcases) for their guests.
The Worship Committee is looking for Lay Readers.  If you would be interested in being a Lay Reader during worship some Sunday, please speak with Pastor Rhonda or Elder Lynn Hayn.  Lay participation in worship is a vital part of our Presbyterian faith and heritage.
The Session would like to ask that when submitting a Prayer Request for an individual, be sure to let the church office know the reason for the request  -- e.g. recovering from surgery/illness/injury; dealing with a personal loss; facing a chronic illness; serving overseas in the military, etc.  This will make our prayers more specific and will enable us to write cards that are more unique to the person for whom prayers are offered.  Thank you in advance!
One of the programs that the Deacons have organized is a "Food Chain" which provides meals to those in our congregation who are temporarily physically unable to prepare meals for themselves, or their families, due to illness.  If we can have many members in the "chain", then the need to provide frequent meals is reduced to a minimum (this is one situation where too many cooks do not spoil the broth).  Please think about joining our "Food Chain"- you can leave your name and phone number with the Church Secretary in the Church office (973) 827-6444)), or on the sign-up sheet at the rear of the sanctuary.
